Do you want to work on your English while studying at BUT? International students studying at Brno University of Technology are very welcome to take our B2 level English courses alongside local students at the Institute of Social Sciences. Right now it is possible for international students at most faculties of BUT to attend our courses for free.

Courses

We offer four higher level general English courses. They focus on grammar, vocabulary, and above all speaking, and are taught using custom-made study materials by a native speaker. These materials (along with optional homework) are provided for free in pdf format for students to print out or use on an electronic device in class.

It is recommended that international students do one of the B2 / C1 level courses: VYA004 (winter semester) or VYA005 (summer semester).

However, if there is no other option that fits the student’s timetable, or the student wishes to review slightly more basic grammar and vocabulary, they can attend our B1+ / B2 level courses: VYA010 (winter semester) or VYA011 (summer semester).

How do I enrol?

Learning Agreement

As you probably realise, you need to have the course in your Learning Agreement before you can enrol in it. It is often possible to change the courses in your learning agreement if you need to.

Electronic Index

Just like your other courses at the university, you need to have the English course you have chosen in your Electronic Index. Without this, you won’t be able to register for the course online or be awarded the credit for the course.

Information on course times

At the start of each semester there will be an advert for Higher Level English Courses in the NEWS section of our website.  Read it to see when the course times are.

International Students at the Faculty of Civil Engineering

If you can attend when a course is offered, enrol for the course online just like all your other courses.

International Students at other faculties

If you can attend when a course is offered, write to the course teacher (Mr Turland) at Roger.Turland@vut.cz, stating the course code and time + that you are an international student + the faculty you are studying at and he will reserve a place for you if there are still places free. You may be able to enrol online via the university Intranet – ask your Erasmus coordinator for help if you need it. If you can’t enrol online even with help because of technical reasons, don’t worry – see ‘Credits, grades and confirmations’ below. The main thing is to write to the teacher and reserve a place.

Requesting an alternative course time

If the course is full, or you would like to attend at an alternative time, write to the course teacher at Roger.Turland@vut.cz, stating the course code + the times when you are free + that you are an international student + the faculty you are studying at. Mr Turland may be able to open a new course at a time that suits you if enough students request that time.

Group requests

If you can put a group of colleagues together who can all attend at the same alternative time, write to Mr Turland with their names. More students = greater chance of opening a new course at a time that suits you.

Credits, grades and confirmations

International students at the Faculty of Civil Engineering will obtain the course credit in the normal manner via the STUDIS upon successful completion of the semester.

Students at other faculties may manage to enrol via the information system as well, in which case the credit will be awarded normally. If a student doesn’t manage to enrol on the course online, the teacher will contact the student’s Erasmus coordinator by email to confirm that the student has passed the course.

No grade is normally given with the credit from this course. If an international student’s home university requires a grade from the course, this can be arranged. The grade will be sent by email to the student’s Erasmus coordinator.

A document confirming that an international student has passed one of our courses at B2 level can also be provided at the end of the semester if required.
